Sriram Velamuri, 17
North Springs Charter School of Arts and Sciences, senior
Sriram Velamuri, son of Syama Velamuri and Anuradha Velamuri, has excelled in the math and sciences during his time at North Springs Charter School. He has been a member of the math team throughout his high school career, serving as captain during his junior and senior years. Velamuri has been part of the science team as well, participating in both the science Olympiad and the science bowl.
This experience has lead Velamuri to several honors. In just the last year, Velamuri was named a candidate for the 2008 Presidential Scholars program, an honor that only 30 students from the state of Georgia receive. He is also a semifinalist in the nationwide Science Talent Search. Additionally, he has been named the Siemens Advanced Placement (AP) scholar for 2008.
“Outside of those accomplishments, I have garnered some team trophies for the school by leading the mathematics team and I achieved a perfect composite score on the ACT,” Velamuri, an avid member of the national Beta Club and the national Honor Society, said. “Outside of school, my greatest achievement is creating a mathematics volunteer tutoring service at my local library.”
Velamuri plans to study biomedical engineering or biology as an undergraduate and eventually wants to attend medical school. At this time, he has already been accepted several schools, including Georgia Institute of Technology, Rice University and Emory University. He hopes to one day become a physician, because it will allow him “to have a humanitarian career, while also remaining involved in the biological sciences.”
His short term goals include participating in research and volunteer activities, as well as studying abroad in India where he wants to provide services to the poor.
