Kathryn Black, 18
North Springs Charter High School, senior
North Springs Charter High School senior Kathryn Black is involved in many activities, but one in particular has been a part of her life for 11 years: playing the harp. Kathryn, daughter of Vicki and William Black, discovered her passion for music at an early age after observing the orchestra pit at the Houston Ballet, where the harp especially fascinated her.
“It was just a beautiful instrument,” Kathryn said. “It’s something that not many people play.”
Besides embracing the beauty and unique qualities of the harp, Kathryn values the freedom of expression that it offers her. “There’s so much music that there’s something for every kind of mood you’re in.”
In addition to playing in the North Springs orchestra, Kathryn has been a member of the Georgia All-State Orchestra since her sophomore year. She also plays in the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Sandy Springs Youth Orchestra. In April, Kathryn traveled to Austria with the Sandy Springs Youth Orchestra to participate in music workshops, study with a music professor, perform with the other orchestra members and tour the cities that they visited.
“It was really cool learning the culture,” Kathryn said. “It was something that no other musician really gets.”
In addition to performing in large orchestras, she also enjoys playing for smaller audiences. She recently played holiday music at a Fulton County Board of Education meeting, the Huntcliff Fiddlers Club at Sunrise at Huntcliff Summit II and Northside Hospital. Kathryn occasionally plays at weddings as well.
While she devotes a great deal of time to playing the harp, she also is committed to her position as the student body president at North Springs.
“Student government, in my opinion, is really what makes or breaks the school,” Kathryn said. “It’s something that can get kids involved. You can do so many things. You can help out the community with blood drives and the Sandy Springs Festival, and you can also help out the school by doing homecoming dances or doing fundraisers.”
Kathryn also is a member of the North Springs National Honor Society, the National Science Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Kathryn has been accepted to the University of Michigan as an early-decision applicant. She plans to major in chemical engineering and is considering a minor in music. In the meantime, she plans to work hard as student body president and balance her various commitments for the rest of her senior year.
