It could be called “the smash-and-grab of the grooms.”

The Buckhead store of Filene’s Basement is well known for its annual “Running of the Brides” dress sale, at which thousands of shoppers line up in the predawn darkness to grab bargain wedding dresses for up to 90 percent off the retail price.

Burglars hit that store in the predawn hours Feb. 10, but they were after men’s clothing, not gowns.

The thieves smashed out a front door about 2:15 a.m. at Filene’s Basement on Peachtree Road and made off with an estimated $15,000 worth of designer men’s clothing.

They used a brick to shatter the door and dropped armloads of clothing while fleeing the scene, according to the police. The culprits were described only as four males. The report mentioned nothing about them being anxious grooms.

A rash of similar burglaries plagued high-end clothing boutiques across metro Atlanta last year as “blue jean bandits” targeted designer jeans and other items, rushing through the stores grabbing everything they could and making a speedy retreat.

The front door of Filene’s Basement is off the interior parking deck of the Lenox Marketplace retail center at the corner of Peachtree and Roxboro roads. There was no immediate word as to where the center’s security guards were at the time of the burglary.

For calendar purposes, mark March 20 for this year’s Running of the Brides at Filene’s Basement.
