The city of Atlanta may have to forfeit $11.3 million for allegedly mishandling federal grant money intended to help people find jobs — money the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency has already spent.
The agency spent that money on contracts without competitive bids, making questionable expenditures and supplying services to ineligible recipients, according to an audit by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of the Inspector General.
The audit recommends that the Labor Department seek to recover the $11.3 million in Welfare-to-Work and Workforce Investment Act funds.
The city can submit a document before March 15 to dispute the findings. The city also can resubmit records before June 15.
