The Peachtree-Dunwoody Road bridge over Nancy Creek should reopen March 23, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced Monday, March 22.
The city of Sandy Springs will hold a ribbon cutting March 23 at 2 p.m. on the north side of the bridge.
The bridge had been closed to motorists for about six months after it failed when September floodwaters undermined the center support of the bridge.
About 18,000 cars a day use Peachtree-Dunwoody Road, which connects Sandy Springs, Buckhead and Brookhaven.
The $1 million project was completed using emergency funds from the federal Highway Administration, Sandy Springs Director of Public Works Tom Black said. The new bridge includes 5 ½-foot-wide sidewalks on both sides for pedestrians and cyclists.
State transportation officials also announced another flood-damaged bridge, located on Riverside Drive over Marsh Creek in Sandy Springs, would reopen April 13.
“We are very glad to be getting these bridges opened,” said DOT District Construction Engineer Mickey McGee. “We understand the inconvenience that the public had to bear and we appreciate their patience. We had no choice in replacing these bridges – they were damaged to the point of being unsafe, but our contractors worked hard to get them done quickly.”
