U.S. Rep. John Lewis (center) was presented the key to the city of Sandy Springs by Mayor Eva Galambos and Vice Mayor Tibby DeJulio during the Oct. 5 meeting of City Council. Mayor Galambos recalled and thanked Lewis for his support of Sandy Spring residents’ right to vote on cityhood during the many years of that campaign. She said Lewis fought for the rights of people to vote during the Civil Rights movement and was one of the few officials to speak out in favor of the right to vote for cityhood. She also thanked the congressman for his support of federal funding to help the city’s efforts to improve Hammond Drive. Lewis said, “As I stand here, I can recall how you fought so hard to develop and organize the city” and he was proud to have been able to help that effort.
