Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed former Sandy Springs City Councilman Doug MacGinnitie as the new commissioner of the Department of Revenue.
MacGinnitie, who ran unsuccessfully last year to become the state’s secretary of state, served as the District 1 member of the Sandy Springs City Council, filling out the term originally won by David Greenspan, who moved out of the state for business reasons..
Rather than seek a full four-year term on the City Council in 2010, MacGinnitie decided to run for the office of secretary of state as a Republican. He was defeated in the primary election by Brian Kemp who went on to win the office.
Previous to his election to the Sandy Springs City Council, MacGinnitie served as COO of Grassroot Soccer, a nonprofit organization that uses soccer to touch the lives of youth in southern Africa. He also co-founded and served as chief operating officer and a director of Beecher Carlson, a commercial insurance brokerage firm headquartered in Atlanta.
