Fulton County prosecutors are looking for volunteers willing to have wires in their air-conditioning units painted bright colors.
The idea is to curtail copper theft, Senior Assistant District Attorney Hannah Chung told members of two Neighborhood Planning Units in Buckhead on July 5.
Chung said the initiative would involve painting the wires with a neon-colored paint to deter theft and resale of the copper.
“We have an initiative that is being spear-headed by the burglary task force,” she said. “One of the things we hope to do, is see if it makes a difference if we paint the copper a certain color to see if it deters thefts and, if not, will it deter people from buying it? Right now we are in the very beginning stages of this whole project.”
She said part of the problem with preventing copper theft is it is, “hard to identify what’s legit and what’s not.”
