Vice President Joe Biden told a group of rabbis in Sandy Springs May 8 that the Obama administration is working hard to defend Israel and prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Biden was in town to address the Rabbinical Assembly, an international conference of conservative rabbis. He told the group that he has been a supporter of Israel since his early days in the U.S. Senate and defended the president’s work with Israel.

“I’m proud of our record,” Biden said. “I believe no president since Harry Truman has done more for Israel’s physical security than Barack Obama.”

More than 300 rabbis from around the world are attending the four-day social, educational and political conference on conservative Judaism at the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North hotel.

During his mid-morning address, Biden applauded the president for “going the extra diplomatic mile” to crack down on the nuclear threat from Iran.

“U.S. policy under Barack Obama is not one of containment,” Biden said. “We will prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.”

Biden told the group about meeting with former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir early in his Senate career. He said Israel was in the midst of war, and Meir told him something about Israel that reinforced his views about the importance of the Jewish state.

“She said, Senator, don’t look so worried. We Jews have a secret weapon for survival here in this region,” Biden said. “Our secret weapon is that we have no place else to go. Remember it.”
