Sidewalk Radio and SCAD Atlanta are proud to announce the launch of The Sidewalk Art Project,  an audio education experience in which Sidewalk Radio, a monthly show on AM 1690 “The Voice of the Arts”, is incorporated into the curriculum. Students representing the various departments in the School of Fine Arts – printmaking, photography, painting, sculpture and foundation studies – will listen to previously aired episodes of Sidewalk Radio, pick their favorite, and then create an original work of art.  Sidewalk Radio thematically focuses on art, architecture, design, development, city planning and preservation. Episodes feature people, places and things that have had a great impact on and are important to Atlanta’s physical and cultural development.

Each student’s original work of art will be featured on a project web site, and be available for viewing and voting by the public. The Top 25 pieces as chosen by voters will be featured in a gallery show, The Sidewalk Art Show. The show’s location will be determined by student vote later in the quarter. To connect the physical art show with the airwaves, the artist selected “Best In Show” will be a featured guest on the upcoming June episode of Sidewalk Radio. The episode will be devoted to the project, showcasing artists, educators, and the program’s impact on students and their art.

Currently, Sidewalk Radio boasts 19 shows that cover local arts, architecture, design, development, city planning and preservation. Host Gene Kansas has interviewed over 80 guests since the debut of Sidewalk Radio in October of 2010. Some of the notable guests include: Radcliffe Bailey , Ronnie Land, Chris Fennell, Todd Murphy, Cooper Sanchez, and Chip Simone, Stuart Horodner (ACAC), Spalding Nix Carol Thompson (High Museum), Louis Corrigan (Flux Projects), Beauchamp Carr (Woodruff Arts Center), Bill Bartholomay (Chairman Emeritus Atlanta Braves), Ted Ryan (Coca-Cola Archivist), Boyd Coons (Executive Director of Atlanta Preservation Center), Brian Leary (CEO of Atlanta BeltLine), Bruce McEvoy (Chairman of Board at MODA), Bob Amick (Restauranteur) and more.
