The 148th annual commemoration of the Battle of Atlanta during the Civil War kicks off a weekend of events with a gala dinner at 7 p.m., Friday, July 20, at historic East Lake Golf Club. It will be an evening of food, history, and entertainment, beginning with a Southern feast.

Joe Gransden, frequent headliner at Café 290 in Sandy Springs, will entertain along with members of his “Big Band.” Dennis Boggs returns to add his special touch to the evening as Abe Lincoln. Boggs has performed as America’s 16th president for more than ten years. And Sam Hagan will offer an authentic historic touch to the evening with his rendition of An American Trilogy. The renowned tenor has performed as a featured soloist with some of America’s best orchestras including the Atlanta Symphony, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and the Flagstaff Festival Orchestras, and at the world-famous Spoleto Festival.

A silent auction will raise funds to erect and maintain historic markers across the Battle of Atlanta area to augment existing historic markers. The new signs will have graphics and maps to involve readers and provide a 365-day-a-year Battle of Atlanta experience for visitors as well as area residents.

Tickets are $50 or a table of ten for $450. For tickets to the gala, contact Sylvia Harrison at 404.556.1942 or Marti Hagan at 404.377.5824or by e-mail to MartiHagan@aol.com.

On July 21, there will be a full day of events to mark the anniversary, including tours, re-enactments, a 5K run and more. For additional information about the gala and all the other events happening to commemorate the Battle of Atlanta, visit. www.batlevent.org.
