By Officer Larry Jacobs

National Night Out started back in 1984 in an effort to heighten awareness and strengthen the bond between local law enforcement and the community they serve.

In 2011, National Night Out involved over 37 million people in over 15,000 communities, including U.S. territories and U.S. military bases all over the world.

This year, National Night Out will be held on Aug. 7. For the third year in a row, the event will be staged at Hammond Park, corner of Hammond Drive and Glenridge Drive.  The event runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Parking will be in the lower lot off of Hammond Drive.  A display of police, Fire and EMS vehicles will be in the closed lot off of Glenridge Drive.

In addition to personnel from the Sandy Springs Police Department, the Sandy Springs Fire Department and Rural Metro Ambulance, we will have police volunteers, Citizens on Patrol (COPS) volunteers, SSPD Explorers and CERT volunteers from the SSFD.  Of course, as the major sponsor, Target will also have 10 or so volunteers at this year’s event.

As with any social event like this, we will have hot dogs, hamburgers, snow cones and plenty of water and Gatorade. Plus a special appearance by Mac, your very own Sandy Springs Fire Department clown.

We would like to thank following sponsors:  Target, the Sandy Springs Police Department, the Sandy Springs Fire Department, the city of Sandy Springs, Rural Metro Ambulance, Kroger, Publix, Whole Foods, Costco, Holiday Inn Express, Buffalo Wild Wings, Delta Community Credit Union, Pig – N- Chick and Fast Signs.

Please come join us, meet your very own Sandy Springs first responders, come meet your neighbors and eat some great food.
