Sheriff Ted Jackson will likely avoid facing challenger Richard Lankford in a runoff following the July 31 primary that resulted in a recount.
The recount, conducted Wednesday, Aug. 8, shows the incumbent sheriff received 50.05 percent of the vote, just enough to prevent a runoff. Lankford received 32.46 percent of the vote. By law, a candidate needs to win more than 50 percent of the vote to win an election outright.
Fulton County spokeswoman Spokeswoman Jessica Corbitt-Dominguez said the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections must meet to formally certify the vote. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Lankford has criticized the recount process and indicated he may challenge the result in court. To read that article, click here.
