DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA, Reporter Newspapers broadcast partner) –

The DeKalb County Board of Education voted on Friday to appoint former Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond to serve as the district’s interim superintendent.

Thurmond will have a one year contract with a salary of $275,000

His first goal is to get DeKalb schools off of SACS probation.

Prior to that the board discussed a separation agreement with its former superintendent, Dr. Cheryl Atkinson.

School officials said they’d mutually agreed to end their relationship with Atkinson.

“The Board and Dr. Atkinson each determined and believe that it is in the best interest of all concerned that there be a mutual separation and they wish each other well in all their future endeavors,” the board said in a statement.

Atkinson was chosen to be the new superintendent in Aug. 2011 when she resigned from her superintendent position in Lorain, OH, a district with approximately 8,000 students. DeKalb County has nearly 100,000 students.
