State transportation officials say a scam artist appears to be trying to scare metro Atlanta motorists into paying fake traffic fines.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said in a press release Aug. 1 that someone calling himself “Lt. Derek White of the Georgia DOT” contacted a resident and insisted she pay by phone more than $300 to cover speeding fines or face going to jail.

“There is no individual named Derek White employed by the Georgia Department of Transportation,” DOT said in the press release. “Further, the Department has no enforcement or collection authority regarding traffic tickets or fines.”

DOT asks that anyone with information about the matter contact police or DOT’s Investigations Unit at (404) 347-0620.
