Sandy Springs Fire Marshal Jeff T. Scarbrough is resigning to take a job as Fire Chief with Athens-Clarke County, the city has confirmed.

Scarbrough’s departure marks the second high profile departure announced today. Public Safety Director Terry Sult also is moving on to take over as police police chief of Hampton, Va.

Fire Chief Jack McElfish wished Scarbrough well.

“I am proud of Jeff,” the chief said in an email. “We strive in the department to help our people grow. Jeff is a tremendous asset. While I hate to see him go, I am very excited for him to take on this new opportunity. It is a tremendous accomplishment and testament to his hard work and dedication. I know that Athens-Clarke County is fortunate to have Jeff as their new chief.”

City spokeswoman Sharon Kraun said the timing of Sult’s and Scarbrough’s announcements is coincidental.

“Both men are taking on positions presenting greater personal growth in larger agencies,” Kraun said. “It shows the caliber of men and women we have who work in our public safety departments. Their expertise is respected and sought out.”
