Demolition crews are removing debris after they tore down three abandoned apartment buildings in Downtown Atlanta on Wednesday – one on  Joseph E. Boone Boulevard  and two on Martin Luther King Drive.

According to our affiliate CBS Atlanta, Mayor Kasim Reed said code enforcement officers worked tirelessly to take over the abandoned properties from deadbeat owners. It allowed him to make good on a promise to get rid of the eyesores – making room for beautification that will include a new city park.

Atlanta officials said they plan to demolish 25 other rundown buildings in the next 30 days.
