An early-morning fire at the corner of Spring Street and North Avenue destroyed part of the Midtown building that houses JR Crickets restaurant. Located across from The Varsity, the fire started in the apartment above the restaurant and left water, smoke and structural damage in the popular wings joint. JR Crickets is closed until further notice. The Atlanta Police Department is investigating the cause of the blaze.

An anarchist group is claiming to have vandalized scores of parking meters across the city, including several on Decatur Street/DeKalb Avenue and Edgewood and Auburn avenues. The group, which sent an e-mail to East Atlanta Patch, did not identify itself, but said it glued or tampered with some 54 meters in the city, including some on Ponce de Leon Avenue and Jesse Hill Jr. Drive SE.

Neighbors on the westside who live around shuttered Waterworks Park are lobbying the city to re-open portions of the park for public use, according to a report at 11 Alive. The park was closed before the 1996 Summer Olympics for fear of a terrorist attack on the city’s water supply.

Jenny Levison confirmed to Decatur Metro that she will open an outpost of her popular Souper Jenny restaurant in the old Pita Pit space in Decatur in February.

Tony and Katie Paradowski of Decatur won $50,000 for their Christmas display featured on ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight, according to a report at Decaturish.
