Gov. Nathan Deal has activated the Georgia National Guard to help clear roadways and rescue motorists and students trapped on school buses after snow paralyzed the city.
During a press conference just after 11 p.m., Deal said a combination of people leaving work early at the same time and school districts not releasing students early enough were the cause for the gridlocked streets. Deal said state troopers were being sent to each school where students are sheltering in place for added security. Hundreds of students in Atlanta and Fulton County are being forced to spend the night in schools.
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said everyone needs to stay home Wednesday so crews to salt and sand the roads and streets. He urged the business community to let workers stay home tomorrow.
