A rendering of the Walton development at King Memorial station.

Walton Communities will build a mixed-use development of nearly 400 apartments and 13,000- square feet of retail next door to the King Memorial MARTA station, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The roughly four-acre property sits behind the transit station and is currently a parking lot.
King Memorial is the first station selected by MARTA for a mixed-use development to be built on land owned by the transit system. Last year, MARTA put out a call for developers to submit plans for projects that would spur revitalization – and generate revenue – around 10 stations in the system.
The next potential development is around the Avondale Estates MARTA station.

  1. This is a big deal for MARTA and the east side. With its funding severely constrained but its massive investment in land, transit oriented development will be the key to MARTA’s future. I’m much more interested in building new mixes of retail and housing around existing stations, meaning more people riding the trains, and more places that I can get to by riding from my station. I’d love to see the same thing happen with Inman Park’s station. For such a vibrant neighborhood, the MARTA station is very suburban and not well suited to pedestrians.

  2. While it’s a great project for the people of King Memorial to invest in,I do have to wonder if Train stations that are in majority Black areas will get a piece of the pie? So far, they’ve been promised train extension for years and haven’t gotten it
Supposedly, Marta has considered 12 stations to do this with. Hopefully, they will consider stations like areas like Indian Creek, College Park etc or at least a train station. Otherwise, it would be another day of how the people of those districts wouldn’t be benefitting from Marta.
