From left, Alabama State Rep. Patricia Todd, US Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia and US Congressman John Lewis are honorary co-chairs.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed was part of this morning’s launch of a $1 million multi-state campaign to build support for same-sex marriage in Georgia and across the South. Freedom to Marry has officially launched Southerners for the Freedom to Marry to offer public education and raise money for the cause.

Reed joins other honorary co-chairs in the bipartisan movement, which includes well-known Republicans and Democrats like Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA); and former President George W. Bush’s media advisor, Mark McKinnon.

The campaign is focusing on the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

  1. There is no good reason to deny that we must keep evolving until an adult, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, monogamy or polyamory, race, or religion is free to marry any and all consenting adults. The limited same-gender freedom to marry is a great and historic step, but is NOT full marriage equality, because equality “just for some” is not equality. Let’s stand up for EVERY ADULT’S right to marry the person(s) they love. Get on the right side of history!
