City taxpayers might no longer have to foot the tab for Underground Atlanta, according to a report in Creative Loafing. Multiple sources say Mayor Kasim Reed is once again revisiting what should be done with retail/restaurant/historic area. One option could include ending the city’s contract with Dan O’Leary, the real estate executive who inked an 88-year lease in 1999 for $100,000 per year, and later selling the properties. Rather than City Hall take the lead on Underground Atlanta’s redevelopment efforts – and spend millions of dollars in the process – it could instead make a deal with a third-party buyer for the site.

A man walking near the Krog Street tunnel in the Old Fourth Ward on Sunday was robbed at gunpoint, according to an Atlanta Police Department report. The  victim said a blue, newer model Hyundai Elantra pulled along side him as he walked on Decatur Street near the tunnel around 7:15 p.m. A black man with a gold tooth got out of the car and verbally threatened to kill the victim and demanded money. The suspect took the victim’s wallet, keys, sunglasses and then hit the suspect in the head with the gun as he took a gold chain. The victim said there were two more suspects in the car. Owners of the Decatur Dairy Queen are close to an agreement that will ensure the restaurant will return once new apartments are built on the current DQ site, according to a report in Decaturish. Lyn Menne, Decatur’s Assistant City Manager in charge of Community and Economic Development, told the March 6 Decatur 101 class that she expects the DQ will return. The 210 unit Trinity Triangle apartment development will open in the next 15 to 18 months.
