Fulton County will hold three public hearings on a proposed 17 percent property tax increase before voting on July 16.

Commissioners voted 5-2 on the increase. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, supporters of the hike say it’s necessary to protect services such as libraries. Some opponents say an increase is illegal, and Commissioner Liz Hausmann, who represents North Fulton and voted against the hike, says the county should focus on managing costs instead.

The hearings will take place July 9 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and July 16 at 10 a.m. at the Fulton County Government Center, 141 Pryor St., Atlanta.
