One person is dead after a vehicle accident on Buford Highway involving two pedestrians.
According to the Brookhaven Police Department, officers responded to Buford Highway near Briarwood Road Sunday morning at about 3:05 a.m. One pedestrian was found dead on the scene while the other was transported to Grady Hospital in critical condition.
The accident investigation revealed that the vehicle involved was traveling south on Buford Highway when the two pedestrians “darted” in front of the vehicle from the east side of the roadway. Neither the driver nor passenger suffered any injuries.
Accident investigators determined that the two pedestrians described as Hispanic males were leaving a nightclub establishmentwhen they were struck by the vehicle. Both pedestrians were believed to be under the influence of alcohol and crossing the roadway illegally. The driver of the vehicle was not found to be at fault.
A preliminary identification of the pedestrians have been provided to police. Investigators are working to confirm the identification and notify family of the deceased before releasing the information.
At approximately 5:30 a.m., a separate vehicle drove around police barricades during the on scene investigation and was stopped by officers. That driver, Ramon Ramos-Abaka, was found to be under the influence of alcohol. Ramos-Abaka was arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Driving Without a License. Ramos-Abaka was transported to the DeKalb County Detention Center.
Brookhaven Police are continuing to work with community partners in the residential areas of Buford Highway to educate them on the traffic laws surrounding their duties as pedestrians to ensure the safety of the roadways. The city of Brookhaven continues to work on the improvement projects currently underway on Buford Highway that will add additional pedestrian crosswalks and better restrict pedestrian access in areas that are found to be unsafe for pedestrians to cross.
