The Georgia Department of Transportation is suspended all construction-related lane closures throughout metro Atlanta and the state this weekend.

Beginning at noon, Friday, August 29, and continuing until 5 a.m Tuesday, Sept. 2, there will be no lane closures for construction activities on interstate highways or heavily travelled state freeways and road, according to a press release from GDOT.

Traffic likely will still be heavy in various locations, however, as a football game is scheduled at the Georgia Dome Saturday afternoon; NASCAR races in Hampton are set for Saturday and Sunday nights; and the Atlanta Braves have home games Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and Monday afternoon.

The department also advises that some long-term lane closures may need to remain in place for safety reasons and that incident and emergency repair related closures may be necessary on any route at any time.

Those planning to be on roadways during the holiday weekend should call 511 or visit  to learn current traffic conditions.
