The Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced today that outdoor community pools for residents and visitors will open Memorial Day weekend, beginning today, May 23. Outdoor pools will be open and free to all visitors on Memorial Day.

“Opening the outdoor pools is great way to welcome summer,” said Amy Phuong, commissioner of the Department of Parks and Recreation. “This summer we are pleased to re-open the Reverend James Orange Pool in the Oakland City community, a pool that showcases Mayor Kasim Reed’s commitment to Atlanta’s youth and families.”

This summer DPR is implementing a new outdoor pool membership to ensure the safety of all pool attendees. All swimmers are encouraged to pre-register on-line for the free membership card at www.usamanagement.com/cityofatlanta. Membership cards can also be obtained on site.

In addition to the pools reopening, the Early Bird Adult Lap Swim Program is back. Adults and seniors can access the Grant Park pool at 7 a.m. for an early morning water workout every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Seniors 55 and older are encouraged to participate in Senior Free Swim Wednesdays at South Bend and Pittman Park pools and on Thursdays at Candler Park pool. Senior Free Swim provides a dedicated time for older Atlantans to enjoy the outdoor pools for exercise, leisure swimming and to meet their neighbors.

“Whether you want to cool off, get fit or create memories with family and friends, DPR’s outdoor pools have something for everyone, including designated lap lanes, water features and kid-friendly zones,” said Annika Holder, executive director of the Office of Recreation. “For those who can’t make it to the outdoor pools, free swim hours will be offered at DPR’s three natatoriums from June 1 through August 2.”

In addition to free community swim during the week, daily rates for outdoor community pools are $4 for adults and $2 for children and senior citizens. Children five and under are free.
