The Brookhaven Bucks baseball team is returning for a new season.
The team, composed of college players, scheduled its 2015 season opener for June 1. The Bucks’ season continues until mid-July, according to the schedule on its webpage, brookhavenbucks.com.
Corey Patterson, who played 12 years in Major League Baseball, will coach the Bucks this season, the announced in a press release. “I’m glad to be back on a baseball field. We’ve got a great group of players,” Patterson said.
“We could not be more excited to have Coach Patterson join the Bucks this season. Coach Patterson is an incredible player and we can’t wait to see how that translates as our head coach,” said Brad Dickison, Bucks owner and general manager.
The Bucks play in the Sunbelt League, a summer collegiate wooden-bat league with teams in Georgia and Alabama. Bucks home games are played at Oglethorpe University.
The Bucks feature college players who are pursuing baseball at the next level. In 2014, eight members of the team were selected in the Major League Baseball draft, the Bucks said. The 2015 team counts players from 19 colleges and universities across eight states, the Bucks say on their webpage.Several players from last season’s team, which finished the season 19-10, are returning for the new season, the Bucks said.
Returning Bucks include Deric Boone of Southern Union State, who set the Bucks franchise record with a .355 batting average last season, J.J. Shaffer of Auburn University, Oscar Prioleau of the Naval Academy, Chaz Wilson of Union University and Will Johnson of Georgia State University, the Bucks said.
