A 53-year-old Lawrenceville man faces charges after a late-night shootout in Sandy Springs with his niece’s ex-boyfriend, Sandy Springs police report.

Kevin Gandy was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony. He was wounded  in the exchange of gunfire and was taken to North Fulton Hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition, police said in a press release.

Gandy was shot while trying to retrieve a vehicle for his niece from Sean McDuffie, her ex-boyfriend, police said in the release. The two men met about 11 p.m. June 10 in the parking lot at 3295 River Exchange Drive. Both men were armed.

“[Gandy] … pointed a gun at [McDuffie, who] retreated. … Multiple shots were fired between the two individuals and [Gandy] was shot in the chest,” the police press release says. “[McDuffie] was not injured and it was determined that [he] shot [Gandy] in self- defense.”
