The Federal Transit Administration has sent a stern warning to Mayor Kasim Reed and MARTA Chief Keith Parker about “continuing concerns with the safety and operation” of the Atlanta Streetcar project. According to a report in the AJC, the city received the letter of concern on Sept. 3. Among the critical issues the feds say must be addressed: defects in the overhead electrical system; failure to maintain contracts for maintenance services; poorly developed and implemented operating procedures; failure to comply with accident reporting requirements; leadership and staffing vacancies; and lack of technical expertise because of high turnover. The city has asked for $30 million from the FTA to extend the streetcar line.
