State transportation appear to be backing off plans to add bike lanes to a portion of Peachtree Road through Buckhead, ajc.com is reporting.

The Georgia Department of Transportation hasn’t announced its decision, which is expected soon, but ajc.com said people familiar with the agency’s plans say the bike lanes have been killed.

“It’s my understanding that the bike lanes are not going to be done,” the website quoted Sam Massell, president of the Buckhead Coalition, as saying.

The coalition recently wrote DOT a letter opposing the lanes and saying they were unpopular in the community. DOT this week said it had received thousands of comments on the bike lane proposal.

DOT officials have proposed adding a central turn lane on Peachtree between Pharr and Deering roads and bike lanes along Peachtree from Deering to Peachtree Battle Avenue.
