After months of speculation and searching, Brookhaven Innovation Academy has found a home in Norcross. The site is the location of the former New Life Charter School.
The Norcross site is approximately 10 miles from Skyland Park in Brookhaven, where BIA initially wanted to be located. According to school officials, Campus Drive is 10 miles from the Brookhaven MARTA Station.
“We are excited about the Campus Drive location as an option for our school. Being a former charter school, it provides us with a great solution to open this fall, and it also a good learning environment for all opening year grades, kindergarten through 6th grade,” said BIA Board Chair Jennifer Langley in a statement.
BIA is currently completing the Site and Facility Code requirements with the Georgia Department of Education which are ongoing and should soon be finalized, she said.
Last year, BIA sought to have the school located in Brookhaven’s Skyland Park and several other options in the city of Brookhaven, including Skyland Elementary and a portion of land known as the PDK Greenspace fronting along Clairmont Road, to name a few, said Executive Director Bates Mattison in a press release.
“This location [in Norcross] allows us to open the school and begin educating our students with our innovative curriculum, while being cost-conscious during our startup period,” Mattison said. BIA is continuing to pursue options for a permanent home in the Brookhaven area, he said.
BIA board member Edward Lindsey said because BIA is a state charter school, it is not bound by city our county district lines.
“Our mission is to achieve academic success and serve the needs of our kids, including the diverse population of Hispanic and Latino children in the Buford Highway corridor, which extends into Gwinnett,” he said.
Head of School Dr. Laurie Kimbrel and Mattison will hold Coffee Chats every Monday at 1 p.m. at the Copper Coin in Town Brookhaven, 705 Town Blvd., Unit 510, Brookhaven GA 30319, for parents and supporters to visit and hear details on teacher hiring, curriculum updates and more.
