A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation and Aquatic Center will be held July 7 at 11 a.m. in the 100 block of Hilliard Street in the Old Fourth Ward.

The City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation awarded the design-build of the new center to Winter Johnson FS360, a joint venture of Winter Johnson Group and FS360 with design work from KAI Design & Build and Perkins + Will. The new building will replace the old MLK Jr. Natatorium, which is currently being demolished because of structural issues that arose in 2012.

Situated between the Martin Luther King, Jr. MARTA station and the Edgewood Avenue corridor, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation and Aquatic Center will be a steel structure with glass curtain walls and metal paneling, featuring bright color accents.
