The Riverside Drive bridge over I-285 in Sandy Springs is slated to close for three weekends in August for repairs and maintenance, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

A new rendering of the final design of the Riverside Drive/I-285 roundabouts released by GDOT.

The closures are slated for Aug. 5-8, Aug. 12-15 and Aug. 19-22, according to GDOT. On those weekends, the closures will begin at 9 p.m. on Friday and end at 5 a.m. on Monday. All schedules are weather permitting.

A detour plan will be issued next week, according to GDOT.

Construction is already underway on new roundabouts on that stretch of Riverside, and the bridge closure was an originally announced part of GDOT’s plan, though the specific dates weren’t known. GDOT discovered unexpected “damage” to the bridge that will be among the repairs, city officials said at the July 19 Sandy Springs City Council meeting, but GDOT spokesperson Annalysce Baker said that work did not add to the closure schedule.

City Council members noted that the closure could mean traffic snarls, especially with public schools starting up on Aug. 8. “Can we get a big sign [saying], ‘This is a GDOT project’?” joked Councilmember Andy Bauman.
