The city of Sandy Springs is continuing its shopping spree of residential properties on Hammond Drive as placeholders for a potential road-widening. The proposed $350,000 purchase of a house at 418 Hammond, at the intersection with Hildebrand Drive, would be the city’s fifth Hammond acquisition this year.
The concept of widening Hammond between Glenridge Drive and Roswell Road is controversial, as is the question of what happens to the residential properties in the minimum 10-year period before the project would begin, if it happens at all.
On the same Aug. 2 agenda where the Sandy Springs City Council will vote on the 418 Hammond purchase, the council also will discuss the idea of allowing firefighters and police officers to rent the city-owned Hammond homes in the meantime.
The city has budgeted over $3 million for more Hammond property acquisitions and for-sale signs are springing up in front yards there.
