The owner of a Sandy Springs liquor store was arrested and charged with reckless conduct after firing a gun at an alleged shoplifter in a shopping center parking lot as she was fleeing the scene.

Bryan Luu, owner of Dunwoody Package Store at 2090 Dunwoody Club Drive in the Orchard Park shopping center, was arrested Oct. 20 shortly after 8 p.m.

Luu had followed a woman out of the store and into the parking lot after she put a bottle of liquor in her purse and walked out of the store without paying, according to a Sandy Springs police report.

“Luu stood in front of the exit and confronted her by telling her to put it down when she began to run for the door,” the report states. “Luu stated that at this point, he felt scared and he ran to the counter, which was to his right, and retrieved a pistol. Luu followed the woman outside the store where he fired several shots in her direction in an attempt to get her to stop. The woman fled in a red SUV, which was waiting for her outside. At the time of my investigation, there were no injuries and no property damage from the gunshots.”

Dunwoody police officers responded to the scene with Sandy Springs police.

Witnesses told police they heard Luu shout at the woman, “You better give it back!” and “Give it back!” according to the report as he fired several shots at her.

“In doing so [firing at the woman], he consciously disregarded a substantial and unjustifiable risk that his act would cause harm or endanger the safety of the many people in the parking lot and shopping center,” according to the report.

“Several businesses (Kroger, Yogli Mogli, Jetts Pizza) were open and had customers coming in and out of the parking lot. This disregard constitutes a gross deviation from the standard of care which a reasonable person would exercise in the situation,” the report states.

The woman escaped with the liquor.
