MARTA’s Board of Directors has submitted recommendations to Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms to expand the transit system. The board is expected to vote on the list of projects at its Thursday, Oct. 4, meeting at 1:30 p.m.
The project list submission is the latest step in a process that was established after Atlanta voters approved a half-penny sales tax in 2016 to fund major transit improvements. The sales tax is predicted to generate approximately $2.5 billion over 40 years, with the expectation that additional public and private funding will be sought to complete the project list.
The More MARTA plans calls for light rail, bus rapid transit, arterial rapid transit, new transit centers, additional bus routes and upgrades to existing rail stations.
Notably, the list includes more than $570 million for light rail along 15 miles of the Atlanta Beltline and $350 million to build a light rail line from Lindbergh Station to the Emory University/CDC campus.
