A man was shot by Sandy Springs police March 21 and later died, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Erick Cruz Ramirez, 32, who was armed with a knife, was shot by police after he did not comply with verbal commands, the GBI said in a press release.

Police responded to a 911 call around 6:15 a.m. reporting an armed person outside 145 Northwood Drive, a condo complex, according to the GBI. Northwood Drive is off of Roswell Road near I-285.

After Ramirez did not comply, an officer discharged his firearm, striking Ramirez, the GBI said. Ramirez was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the release said.

No officers were injured in the incident, according to the GBI.

The GBI, which regularly investigates officer-involved shootings, will continue the independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s office for review, the GBI said in the release.

Two people were shot by Sandy Springs Police officers in separate incidents last year in May. This is the 24 officer-involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2019.
