Brazilian native Sander Pinheiro is one of the most popular musicians performing in Atlanta. Frequently seen and heard at Buteco and MidCity Cafe, Pinheiro brings his blend of funk, jazz and samba to the Red Light Cafe on Friday, March 22 as part of the Atlanta Jazz International Sound Series sponsored by Global Atlanta and hosted by Myrna Clayton.
Pinheiro was born in Pernambuco and grew up in Recife. His family didn’t have the money to provide him with an instrument and musical training, but he found support in his grandmother’s church where he quickly became a draw. On the side, he worked in nightclubs knowing that this was frowned upon by his conservative church community.
A crisis point came when his pastor found out about his “other” musical life and delivered an ultimatum. Pinheiro was forced into a soul searching quandary. He decided that his music was spiritual and a celebration of life regardless of venue. He became a popular performer in Brazil before moving to the US after a stint of performing in New Orleans with a Brazilian band.
Pinheiro has recorded two albums that are available on Spotify and iTunes. He has performed all over Brazil and in the United States. His music is fluid, moving easily between Brazilian beats and American jazz.
Joining him for his Red Light concert is his long time partner in music Chocolate Costa.
