Harold Dennis.

Occupation: Former DeKalb Reserve Lieutenant

Previous elected offices held: None

Other community service experience: Youth motivation speaker for elementary schools and high schools.

What is motivating you to run for this office?

My motivation to run for sheriff is to provide service, dedication and protection to the citizens of DeKalb County.  I have the heart for the people, and I care for the well-being of citizens and employees of DeKalb County.

What is the biggest issue facing the Sheriff’s Office and how will you address it?

The biggest issue facing the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is officer retention. Because of the salary of our officers, we are dealing with higher attrition than other counties. I plan to address this by implementing immediate pay raises for officers and better/adequate training for all officers.

What strengths and weaknesses have the coronavirus pandemic crisis revealed in law enforcement and jail management in DeKalb County?

Law enforcement must balance public safety and public health. That being said, the current crisis revealed that DeKalb County was not prepared for a pandemic of this magnitude. One strength of the coronavirus pandemic is the workforce of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated. The weakness during the pandemic is the current administration didn’t do much to protect the employees. They weren’t provided adequate equipment, which caused several of the employees as well as inmates to become infected with the coronavirus.
